Learn all about Remedy's Nutrition® Ashwagandha Tincture

Ashwagandha plant, primarily its root and berry, is frequently used to boost energy levels, calm the brain, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Ashwagandha is also used as an "adaptogen" because it supports many different body functions; it is said to 'adapt' to the body's needs. Ashwagandha helps increase energy production within the mitochondria and the production of ATP in the cell.

Ashwagandha has also been described as a 'nervine' tonic, meaning that it helps support the healthy function of the central nervous system. It also contains the compounds Withaferin-A Sitoindosides and acylsterylglucosides.

Studies and Trials for Ashwagandha

"Hypoglycemic, diuretic and hypocholesterolemic effect of winter cherry (Withania somnifera, Dunal) root."

Andallu B, Radhika B. Hypoglycemic, diuretic and hypocholesterolemic effect of winter cherry (Withania somnifera, Dunal) root. Indian J Exp Biol. 2000 Jun;38(6):607-9. PMID: 11116534.

Hypoglycemic, diuretic, and hypocholesterolemic effects of Ashwagandha roots were assessed on human subjects. Six mild NIDDM subjects and six mild hypercholesterolemic subjects were treated with the powder of roots of Ashwagandha for 30 days.

Decrease in blood glucose was comparable to that of an oral hypoglycemic drug. Significant increase in urine sodium, urine volume, significant decrease in serum cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL (low density lipoproteins) and VLDL (very low density lipoproteins) cholesterol were observed, indicating that root of Ashwagandha is a potential source of hypoglycemic, diuretic and hypocholesterolemic agents.

"A prospective, randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of safety and efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of ashwagandha root in reducing stress and anxiety in adults."

Chandrasekhar K, Kapoor J, Anishetty S. A prospective, randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of safety and efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of ashwagandha root in reducing stress and anxiety in adults. Indian J Psychol Med. 2012 Jul;34(3):255-62. doi: 10.4103/0253-7176.106022. PMID: 23439798; PMCID: PMC3573577.

The study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of Ashwagandha roots in reducing stress and anxiety and improving the general well-being of adults who were under stress.

64 subjects with a history of chronic stress were randomized to either the placebo control group or the study drug treatment group and were asked to take one capsule twice a day for 60 days. The treatment group that was given the high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract exhibited a significant reduction (P<0.0001) in scores on all the stress-assessment scales on Day 60, relative to the placebo group. The serum cortisol levels were substantially reduced (P=0.0006) in the Ashwagandha group, relative to the placebo group.

The findings of this study suggest that a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively improves an individual's resistance towards stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life.
