Its scent has been described as having notes of herbs, woods, tobacco and balsams. A famous perfume, 'Miss Dior', features clary sage among its components.
Clary sage has a calming effect that can soothe nervous conditions and provide relief from temporary anxiety. Some even use clary sage to support better sleep, and it is reputed to ease physical and mental tension, promote a sense of euphoria and for some, to intensify dreams. It also alleviates cramps and pms symptoms. Do not use when pregnant.
Because of this tendency to calm (sedate), it is recommended that you do not drive after using clary sage. Clary sage herb has estrogenic effects. It may raise estrogen and progesterone, a benefit for peri- and menopausal women with estrogen imbalances, and is said to ease cramps. The specific chemical component in clary sage responsible for the estrogenic effect is sclerol.
