Details
Biotin is a component of enzymes in the body that break down substances like fats, carbohydrates, and others.
Consumption of raw egg whites (2 per day) may result in severe biotin deficiency, as the egg whites bind the biotin in the intestine and do not allow it to be absorbed.
Reliable laboratory tests for detecting biotin deficiency are not available, so deficiency is usually seen by the symptoms of thinning hair (often with loss of color) and a scaly rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Nervous system symptoms may include depression, exhaustion, hallucinations, and tingling of the arms and legs.
Side Effects
There is some evidence that hair loss can be addressed by taking biotin supplements, combined with applying a corticosteroid used to treat skin conditions such as eczema, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis.
Biotin might increase the thickness of nails in those with brittle nails.
