Most people find it had to believe that they 'weed' they work so hard to eradicate on their lawns is one of the herbal wonders of natural healing . How has dandelion been used?  In traditional herbal medicine dandelion has been used to raise immunity, stimulate the appetite and treat liver, kidney and gallbladder problems. Dandelion has been used to promote better-looking skin, support vision, address heartburn, upset stomach and a lack of breast milk. Dandelion leaves have a diuretic effect.  Therefore, those taking prescription medicines, blood thinners and diuretics should consult their healthcare professional before taking dandelion.  Dandelion contains abundant quantities of vitamins A, B, C, and D, and as minerals such as iron, potassium, and zinc.

Can an organic herb supplement help you to fight aggressive 'chemoresistant' tumors that resist anti-cancer treatments?  Can an herb supplement do this without being toxic to humans and pets?   Documented research (2) on chemoresistant human melanoma ("the most prevalent form of cancer for the 25–29 North American age demographic") evidences that  ethanolic extracts of dandelion "reduce levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide production (NO) and inhibit COX-2 expression or its antioxidant activity, thus making dandelion extracts not only anti-carcinogenic, but anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic and also antinociceptive."(4)

Chemical constituents of dandelion include sesquiterpene lactones increse bile production and lend support to the traditional use of dandelion as a bitter digestive stimulant.  Research also seems to support that these have antiinflammatory and anticancer effects (3,4).  The phenylpropanoid compounds are  believed to reduce inflammation (3).  A fructan fiber known as inulin is also present in high amounts in the root.  Dandelion leaves, when eaten as a food source, provide 297 milligrams of potassium in a three-ounce serving.
