Citronella oil is extracted from species of Cymbopogon, one of the herbs commonly known as lemongrass. The oil is popular for use in perfumes, cosmetics, incense, candles and insect repellents. Citronella exerts warming and activating properties on the mind and body.
Citronella has been registered as an insect repellent in the US since 1948. The EPA has classified Citronella as a non-toxic biopesticide (a natural pesticide). Citronella is effective in repelling the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue fever. For complete effectiveness, it should be reapplied every 1/2 to one hour. It is also found to be effective against lice of the body and hair.
Citronella has a strongly antifungal effect and contains the chemicals citronellal, citronellol and geraniol. For pet use, it can calm dogs that are barking and can deter pets from damaging items in the home.
Citronella can be diluted by putting three drops of essential oil in one teaspoon of a carrier oil such as grapeseed oil and can be used as as astringent to help with oily complexions.
